A photon detector engineered by the Xixian New Area won first prize at the fifth Shaanxi Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition in Xi'an on Aug 22. The project stood out from 12 other projects to win a prize of 50,000 yuan ($7,507.5).

The competition, attended by over 260 experts and participants, was sponsored by the Shaanxi Provincial Committee of the Communist Youth League, the Xixian administrative committee and the Provincial Department of Science and Technology.

Since the beginning of June, the competition received 2,053 project applications, 12 of which made it through to the provincial-level finals.

Duan Xiaolong, secretary of the Shaanxi Provincial Committee of the Communist Youth League, spoke highly of the entrants' achievements, saying that the competition is not only a platform for innovation, but also a stage for realizing dreams.

The Xixian New Area is among the country's first demonstrative bases for innovation and entrepreneurship. In order to make itself into an industrial cluster for hard sciences, the zone has joined hands with renowned incubators, scientific research institutions and innovative companies.

The past year has witnessed the creation of 50,000 new jobs, 16 makerspaces and two entrepreneurial towns due to Xixian's efforts.

A new action plan has been carried out to encourage more talents to start businesses in Xixian, according to Wang Fei, deputy director of the Xixian administrative committee.
